The challenge of this project was a site that slopes from the street 20 feet up to the cliff’s edge. An outdoor stair rises gently alongside the high stepped wall of the private wing and serves as the entry hall. As the house steps up the hill, rooms are stacked up, culminating with the second-story master bedroom overlooking the riverbed. The public spaces inhabit the edge of the bluff, with a private lawn as the foreground to the view. An indoor/outdoor living pavilion—simple stucco planes between glass walls and below clerestory windows—punctuates the public wing.
