The house sits at the edge of transition zone between the high, rolling hills of prairie and the lush valley of the Gallatin River. The valley is interspersed and fed by spring creeks, one of which flows parallel to the house.

The house is like a comet in plan with the living room and kitchen at the head and the bedrooms strung behind. The bedroom wing is covered with a sod roof while the living room wing emphasizes the line between the two landscapes while the bunkered, sod covered bedroom wing merges with the site.

Designed to take advantage of the wonderful summer climate and provide shelter from the harsh winter, the living room wing can open up wide to the site and air with a series of sliding doors that wrap the building.
