Texas State Cemetery

Austin, TX

Lake|Flato’s master plan for the renovation of this 28-acre sacred place removed the cars and created new components to enhance public understanding of the state’s history. New wall-like buildings were placed on the perimeter to provide a sense of enclosure. The 255-foot long Visitor Center forms a pedestrian portal into the cemetery and contains an exhibit gallery, offices, and maintenance facility. The arcing Columbarium Wall and Rose Gate create a ceremonial entrance for state funerals. The Plaza de Los Requerdos commemorates Texas leaders. Storm water was transformed into a crescent lake that traverses the cemetery.
