To create an iconic warehouse for this steel service center, Lake|Flato showcased steel detailing by devising a kit-of-parts using the structural shapes and sections found in the company’s catalogue. For example, sunscreens were created with steel angles and galvanized Z purlins. The winged roof of the office/showroom references the facility’s “tarmac” location (on the decommissioned Kelly Air Force Base) and provides daylight from above. The 600’ by 275’ by 30’ tall warehouse/ crane building is a steel, exoskeleton frame with 6” tilt-slab concrete panels attached to the back of the steel columns.
