We demonstrate impact through our in-house research program, Investigations. This initiative invites individuals and teams across the firm, regardless of discipline or experience, to propose independent research projects. By drawing on both internal and external expertise, we aim to better integrate design and sustainability. The findings are shared through white papers, lectures, and presentations.
Ideas
Designing spaces that address the needs of our society and planet requires thoughtful investigation and knowledge sharing.
As an industry leader, Lake Flato serves as a resource to the design community—sparking dialogue and generating strategies for helping solve the most pressing challenges of our time.

Investigations & Research

Health & Wellness
One of the most powerful aspects of building and space design is the opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of people. We seek to enhance connections to nature, improve air quality and ensure access to daylight, views and spatial choice to bolster productivity, physical health and psychological well-being. Lake Flato applies a scientific, evidence-based approach across architecture, interiors and urban design strategies to positively support both human and ecological thriving and respond sensitively to the unique ecology of each place.

Carbon Reduction & Resource Efficiency
Buildings are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than any other industry. This presents a great challenge to design professionals, but also a great opportunity as we have the knowledge and skills to reduce our impact on the environment. We design high-performing buildings that do more with less—that conserve water and other resources, use less energy and reduce operational and embodied carbon. With more than half of a building’s carbon footprint associated with its structural system, we adapt and reuse existing structures wherever possible. For new construction, we look to wood, mass timber and, where appropriate, rammed earth as effective strategies for reducing a building’s carbon footprint.

Innovative Delivery
Lake Flato works extensively with a variety of builders to develop modular, prefabricated housing for a broader audience of clients. Working with Bensonwood Homes, ICON and other collaborators, Lake Flato has brought innovative tools and processes to the market that, in addition to providing more affordable and scalable options that help address the demand for housing, also reduce material waste, shorten construction times and increase construction quality.
