John Hamilton

Designer

John is an architectural designer in the Higher Education studio at Lake Flato. With two degrees from the University of Tennessee, a Bachelor of Architecture, and a Master of Landscape Architecture, John feels that architecture and landscape architecture exist along a continuum. John believes that by expanding the field of architecture with specific knowledge of landscape-oriented site design and ecology, we can better design for humans and the natural world.

John has developed an ability to recognize and integrate characteristics of ecology, landscape, materiality, and tectonics into his design process. This knowledge enables him to create environments that foster more sensitive, dynamic, and meaningful relationships within the built environment. With a background in carpentry and residential construction, he envisions architecture as a craft that honors and dignifies the skilled hands behind its creation. His design philosophy views each project as a medium to convey something greater—architecture that extends beyond four walls and a roof.

When not in the office, you can find John staying active by playing golf, pickleball, baseball, swimming, biking, and exploring the newest hiking trails.
