Karin Barro

Designer

Karin is a designer deeply committed to the social and ecological contexts that shape the built environment. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University, where she double-majored in Environmental Studies and Studio Art. During her time there, she focused her studies on evolutionary psychology, exploring how innate human predispositions influence aesthetic preferences across cultures.

She went on to receive her Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia, where she also earned a certificate in Historic Preservation. At UVA, Karin pursued independent research on the reuse of stone offcuts and developed furniture prototypes using a 5-axis waterjet in collaboration with the School of Engineering.

Karin is currently a member of the Residential Studio at Lake Flato, where she brings a thoughtful and optimistic perspective on how architecture can meaningfully shape daily life. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys ceramics, painting, playing tennis, backpacking, and the occasional kiteboarding adventure.
