The original house was designed by O’Neil Ford in 1952, with an addition in 2006 located behind the original. The lot was deep but narrow, so when the neighboring lot came up for sale 10 years later, the owners seized the opportunity for more space. Both the father and son are race car drivers, so they needed more parking, as well a family room, office, and another bedroom. Respecting the original architecture, we sought to create a small addition that was seamless and define a larger scale courtyard that the new lot afforded.
Being sensitive to the client’s budget and the modest scale of the original house, the addition is only what it needs to be, providing more open space than a typical neighborhood lot. Both the owners and neighbors have commented that the addition feels like it was part of the original design, like a missing piece.
