Alamogordo Middle School

With a vision of creating the Best School in the Country, the new Alamogordo Middle School will transform the 6–8 grade learning experience through spaces designed for project-based learning and cross-disciplinary collaboration. These environments will elevate academic performance while providing equitable access to health and wellness opportunities for every student.

The school is designed to be a comfortable, nurturing place that feels like home. Outdoor learning spaces embrace Alamogordo’s climate by providing shade and shelter while celebrating the distinctive landscape of the Chihuahuan Desert and the Tularosa Basin. Indoors, the use of New Mexican materials and natural patterns of light, air, and movement creates engaging, joyful spaces that support learning, well-being, and a strong sense of belonging.

Alamogordo Middle School will be organized around three Learning Communities. With the curriculum centered around project-based learning, each Community will provide dynamic learning spaces that are adaptive – with flexibility built in to respond to evolving themes, technologies, or curriculum.

A key focus of the project is creating a high-performance building that improves human health and wellness while leveraging the building as a teaching tool. Biophilic design principles include access to daylight, views to nature, and the use of natural materials to positively impact student performance, focus, and behavior.
