UH Mitchell Center for Art
Houston, TX
The University of Houston commissioned Lake|Flato to create a new portal for the Wortham Theatre, to improve the experience of both theater-goers and performers alike. Lake|Flato’s design includes a new public reception hall, two large rehearsal classrooms, and a second-story office suite for the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. These new spaces visually integrate the School of Theater into the existing Fine Arts Quadrangle with bold architectural forms, animating the academic programs with revealing glimpses of classroom activity through glass walls.

The University of Houston theater department has a well-deserved national reputation for excellence. Finally we have a building that enhances and expands that reputation.
