Bluffview Residence
In a region more associated with rolling prairies, the challenge of the Bluffview Residence was how to occupy a steeply sloping site that terminates in the unexpected surprise of a cliff overlooking a small creek at the base of an intimate canyon. Rather than cutting a road to the top of this environmentally delicate site, the cars are kept at the lower level while the people move up and through the lush landscape. The broad roof encompasses a sequence of rooms, mimicking the natural slope of the hill. The main public rooms run in a one-story volume parallel to the creek, while the master bedroom, at the highest point of the house, enjoys a treetop experience of the canyon below.
