Destination: Lake Flato

There is always some portion of my brain that is constantly spinning, trying to find opportunities for a good road trip. So after I accepted the job at Lake|Flato, my first thought was, which route are we going to drive? We did the first few hours of the drive on I-5 through California. But after hooking off around Bakersfield, we were not going to see another interstate until I-10 in Texas. I've always loved this drive through the Mojave Desert, nothing for miles. Meet my travel companion, Anya, a friend from SF who I convinced to tag along for the drive (she flew back when we got to Texas...

Oklahoma's May Tornadoes

I recently took a trip home and visited some of the sites that were devastated by May's round of tornadoes. The most talked about tornado struck Moore May 20th, moving about 200 miles per hour and spanning 1.3 miles wide. The day before, a tornado touched ground in Shawnee. May 30th and 31st experienced another round of tornadoes which hit Broken Arrow, El Reno and Oklahoma City. The El Reno tornado was moving at 300 miles per hour and was 2.6 miles wide - the widest tornado recorded in U.S. history. It is a surreal experience to walk around the aftermath of these huge storms. The disaster...

What Makes A Winner

In case you haven't heard yet, back in April 2013 our very own Pearl Brewery/Full Goods Warehouse was awarded an AIA COTE Top Ten Award. The award is given by the American Institute of Architects to the top ten most sustainable projects across the country. We're certainly very proud to be on the list beside so many names we admire. There was an especially interesting post in Gizmodo about what elements set each winner apart. Some of these elements included Living Machines, 100% on site renewable energy production, energy meters in every classroom, or in our case it was "energy surfing". Yeah...

Better Know an LFer: Oliver Adamson

"While some may be intimidated by Oli’s tattoos or his silent demeanor, his British accent or the way he effortlessly pulls off a pair of new cowboy boots with skinny jeans, we here at Lake|Flato found him to be one of the nicest guys on the planet. We gave him the nickname “sweet angel baby”, and named our kickball team after him. Oli has always been quick to jump to lend a hand, whether helping manage the materials library, staying late to help out with a project deadline, building an arena out of cans for the food bank, or mentoring our high school intern. His enthusiasm for learning new...
