Students get Sneak-Peak of SACM Construction

The San Antonio Children's Museum team recently had the opportunity to review the building construction progress with a group of UTSA architecture students. The class of soon-to-be graduates are completing their professional practice curriculum, and as part of the class, they were able to tour the site during an exciting phase of the project’s construction. For me, participating in the construction administration phase of this project so close to home has been an incredible experience for my own professional development, so it was fun to share some insights and lessons learned with James...

The Resilient Design Principles

Resilience has become a popular topic in green building over the past few years, especially in the wake of recent natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy. The Resilient Design Institute (RDI) was recently formed by a group of dedicated professionals with long experience and expertise in the fields of sustainability, green building, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture to advance resilience in the built environment, and energy, food, infrastructure, and economic systems. Last year, RDI published a set of 10 resilient design principles that have proven to be a valuable resource to...

DIGITAL PINUP: PENNSYLVANIA FARMHOUSE

Located near the historic town center of Carversville, this Pennsylvania farmhouse takes a modern approach to the agricultural vernacular of the region. A simple palette of wood and metal-clad gables and sheds are arranged with strong connections to the landscape and create a variety of social spaces, both indoors and out. Our clients decided early on that the most sustainable approach to their site would be to reuse the existing house footprint as much as possible. To create their new homestead, the overall form has been simplified, a former porte cochere has been taken over to complete the...

BETTER KNOW AN LF'ER: TY REECE

" So when Ty-Reece interviewed for the job, there was— and in some cases remains— some confusion regarding his name: was it Ty Reece or Tyreece? In the end it didn't really matter because if you say it fast enough no one will know the difference. What we did know for sure is that Ty/Reece was going to be a great fit with the office and that has proven to be true. I actually have a slogan that I use when talking about how well Ty@Reece has blended into the office culture, it goes like this - Ty.Reece! He's no Chris Krajcer...thankfully. Ty#Reece landed on planet Otalfekal almost a year ago and...

Better Know an LFer: Jennifer Young

"If you happen to overhear someone saying something like, 'sore-ey… but, you must have your drawings to me before too-mour-row' chances are you’ve been listening to one of our favorite resident Canadians, Jennifer Young, working her magic on one of our many (sometimes slippery) consulting engineers. Hailing originally from the great northern Provence of Newfoundland, Jennifer has now acclimated to a yearlong summer and shivers at the thought of anything below 60 degrees with a breeze. But don’t let her lack of thermal resistance fool you — she is one tough hombre… if you don’t believe that...

Green Schools Challenge

You may recall that a group of Lake|Flatonians have been working with 4th and 5th graders at Hawthorne Academy make their school campus more sustainable as part of the Green Schools Challenge competition hosted by the local USGBC chapter. The students worked with us to conduct an audit of their school campus and were most interested in the biodiversity index they calculated. They decided to build a garden to attract birds, bees, and butterflies, increasing both plant and wildlife diversity at their school. We learned yesterday morning that our team took 1st place in San Antonio for this...
